Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are you both Qualified Farriers?

Short answer is Yes!

We are both Accredited Professional Farriers with the International Association of Professional Farriers (IAPF)

Richard has a Diploma in Advanced Horse Shoeing and Blacksmithing.

Katelin has a Diploma in Farrier Science.

Katelin is also a Certified Farrier with the American Farriers Education Council (AFEC)

  • Why does it have to be a 5 week hoof care cycle?

After much trial an error we have found 5 weeks to be the most beneficial. Troublesome and poor quality feet are treated more regularly and healthy feet are kept in tip top shape. We want to be able to improve the feet we work on, not just chase the overgrowth. Feet can grow up to 1cm per month!

  • How do I pay?

We will email you an invoice after your booking is completed. By regulation all our invoices are plus GST.

You will also be automatically rebooked for your next booking. You will find your next booking date on the bottom of your invoice.

We allow 24hours for payment on all invoices. Thereafter all overdue invoices will incur a daily admin fee.

We do not accept eft or cash as payment for our services.

  • When are you available?

We are in different areas on different days which varies every week. Some areas are travelled to more often than others.

We are not available after hours or on weekends for routine bookings.

We are contactable between 8am-5pm Monday to Friday.

Depending on your area, new clients may have a 1-4 week wait to secure a booking.

  • What if I’m not available for when you want to book my horses in for?

We understand that our schedules don’t always conveniently line up. For your first booking we do require your attendance. We can then assess if we are able to work on your horses without you present for future bookings. If we can, all we ask is that horses are kept somewhere easy for us to catch them (eg. a yard, stable, small paddock) prior to our arrival. Upon completion we can return horses to their normal turnout if required. If we are unable to easily catch your horse it will miss out on it’s booking, and you may be invoiced a call out fee.

  • How can I be prepared for my booking?

If you are going to attend your booking, please have all your horses caught ready prior to our arrival. This keeps our schedule running smoothly and horses are tended to in a timely manner. We really don’t appreciate waiting around while you fetch your horse from the back paddock or watch while it refuses to be caught. This may lead to the cancelation of your booking, as it impacts the time allocated for other bookings.

Please have wet rugs removed and wipe muddy legs and feet with a towel (please don’t hose them!).

Use fly spray or a fly sheet for sensitive horses during the summer months.

Shelter from the elements is ideal. Please don’t have us standing in the rain, mud or sand to work on your horses. In hot weather, as much shade as possible is appreciated so we are out of the direct sun, even if it’s just a tree. A dry flat area is required, if you don’t have concrete that’s ok!

Horses must be well mannered. Farriery is a physically demanding job without having to battle ill mannered horses. Make sure your horse is comfortable standing tied for longer periods of time and willing to pick up all four feet. Otherwise bad or ill-mannered horses may result in a refusal of service.

  • What happens if there is bad weather forecasted?

Heavy rain, high winds, storms or extreme heat will most likely result in a rescheduled booking. Not everyone has cover for us or horses that will cooperate in extreme weather conditions. It is safer to try again another day. We always endeavor to get you rebooked asap.

  • Will you come for only one horse?

Yes! We are happy to come out for only one horse, even if it is only a trim.

  • Are you pro Barefoot or pro Shod?

We are pro horse! Our decision is based on the needs and requirements of the horse. Not all horses need to be shod and not all horses are suited to being barefoot.
